SELF DRIVE WITH BED & BREAKFAST ACCOMMODATION - AUSTRALIA

 The eastern states of Australia are ideally suited for independent travel based on a rental car and delightful Bed And Breakfast type accommodation. Small clean and comfortable you will always be welcome at over 500 properties throughout the eastern states and a sumptuous breakfast awaits you each morning. To help you plan we have designed an itinerary linking Sydney and Melbourne and selected the best properties along the most scenic route. Here we will book your whole itinerary, which we recommend during the busy season of October through March. Alternatively try the Free Style programme where we book your first night only and you are able to plan your own itinerary based on your copy of the Australia Bed & Breakfast book. We will express mail a copy to your home address upon receipt of your deposit (allow 5 days to receive from our US mailing house).

FREE STYLE (First night only booked) 8 DAYS 7 NIGHTS

 Using the "1000 Welcomes" B&B accommodation guide which offers a choice of over 500 carefully selected Bed and Breakfast properties throughout the eastern states of Australia we have packaged a self drive programme based on a minimum of 7 nights accommodation and eight days rental car which allows you to construct your own itinerary. We will book your first nights accommodation at your arrival gateway and provide you with detailed instructions of how to get there. You pick up Your Budget Rental Car at the airport and your onward arrangements are up to you. We have additional night rates including car should you wish to extend beyond the minimum 8 days. Certain restrictions apply to one way rentals and there may be additional drop off charges but we will advise you of these prior to confirmation.

Costs are per person, based on a Budget Rental car for 8 days and Bed and Breakfast accommodation for 7 nights. Rates are valid through September 2000

NOTE: during the MILLENNIUM PERIOD, 29 DEC 1999 - JAN 02 2000 special rates and conditions will apply, these will vary according to your location. We will be happy to quote these surcharges based on your itinerary.

Self Drive Set Itinerary, B&B Accommodation: Sydney - Melbourne
The described scenic inland route is available from December through May. During the winter months, from May to mid October an alternative scenic coastal route is available. The inland route is not available due to snow conditions.

Day 1.Sydney - Berry (155km)

Collect your rental car and leave the Cosmopolitan city of Sydney behind as you explore the rugged Illawarra Coast on the drive to Berry. Recommended is a stop in Wollongong, one of the largest cities in NSW, and the leisure capital of Illawarra. Drive through Port Kembla onto Shellharbour - the oldest town in the area. Continue to Kiama - a coastal town most famous for its blowhole that sprays 60m during high seas. Overnight in Berry.

Day 2.Berry - Batemans Bay (119 Km)

Depart Berry and travel through Macquarie Pass, where you will see spectacular views of the Southern Highlands. Recommended is a stop at Fitzroy Falls. Travel to Nowra and view the beautiful village of Jervis Bay before stopping at the `old-world' township of Milton - stroll along the historic streets and browse in the specialty shops or take the road to Pigeon House Mountain for panoramic views of the area. Next stop is the attractive fishing town of Ulladulla, and Burrill Lake with its unspoilt shores. Overnight in the seaside resort of Batemans Bay.

Day 3.Batemans Bay - Canberra (200 Km)

Depart Batemans Bay for Canberra. Travel though the historic port of Nelligen on the Clyde River and continue to Braidwood and Bungendore - a charming rural village, stop in the village square and browse in the colonial style antique and craft shops before continuing to Canberra, Australia's capital city.

Day 4.Canberra

This whole day is devoted to a discovery of Canberra. You will find Canberra to be a beautifully planned and constructed modern city, with an array of things to see and do. Explore Parliament House, take a relaxing cruise on Lake Burley Griffin, visit the National Gallery of Canberra, the Australian Institute of Sport, the Royal Botanic Gardens and Telecom Tower.

Day 5.Canberra - Smiggins Hole (130 Km)

Depart Canberra for Cooma - Australia's first multi-cultural community, and take some time to stroll around Cooma and its villages. Continue through the small pastoral town of Berridale, and on to Jindabyne, a picturesque alpine township on the shore of Lake Jindabyne. Continue to Smiggins Hole in Kosciusko National Park for your overnight accommodation.

Day 6.Smiggins Hole - Mt Beauty (100 Km)

Depart from Smiggin Holes, travel through Corryong to Shelley and Koetong to Tallangatta - the original town was lost to a watery grave when Lake Hume was created in 1936, but occasionally it reappears during times of drought. Continue to Mt Beauty, at the foot of Mt Bogong, Victoria's highest mountain.

Day 7.Mt Beauty - Beachworth (200 Km)

Depart Mt Beauty for Bright, and Mount Buffalo National Park, a winter ski field and a haven for summer hiking, from the plateau views of the surrounding mountains, rivers and valleys are breathtaking. Overnight in Beechworth - a perfectly preserved town from the goldrush days.

Day 8.Beechworth - Melbourne (300 Km)

Depart Beechworth for Yackandandah - gold was discovered here in 1852, you can browse in the many antique shops, visit the old wool shed, or mine for gold in the creek. Continue to Glenrowan, the scene of Ned Kelly's (the notorious bushranger) last stand in June 1880. The whole town is devoted to the Kelly Gang, important characters in Australian folklore. Travel through Benalla to Euroa before arriving Melbourne.

Day 5.Canberra - Cooma (120 Km)

Depart Canberra for Cooma. In 1949 thousands of immigrants from 33 nations arrived in Cooma to work on the hydroelectric scheme, thus Cooma became Australia's first truly multi-cultural community . Spend some time exploring the villages, stroll along the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, see a statue of the 'Man from Snowy River' or try your hand at trout fishing.

Day 6.Cooma - Orbost (190 Km)

Depart Cooma for Bega, a town made famous for its cheese. Take the coastal route to Eden - an important fishing port first settled by whalers. Travel through Boydtown and stop at the fishing town of Mallacoota before arriving in Orbost on the Snowy River for the Overnight.

Day 7.Orbost - Bairnsdale (85 Km)

Leave Orbost. Stop at Lakes Entrance - a comfortable resort town and gateway to the Gippsland Lakes, visit the Lakes National Park before arriving Bairnsdale for the overnight.

Day 8.Bairnsdale - Melbourne (335 Km)

Depart Bairnsdale travel to Sale, known for its fauna park, maritime history and beaches. Continue through the coalmining areas of Traralgon and Morwell before arriving Melbourne.
